This happened to my 9-3 last year :(
(Brace yourself.)
Had to replace ECU, DIC, alternator, and several fuses/relays. Sounds like you only had the battery hooked up for an instant, so hopefully you will have better luck. Note that I did not try to start my car with the battery backwards, however.
Everything inside the cabin was OK, except for a blown fuse in the auxiliary amp for my door speakers. Not sure if your car has one of these.
DIC is almost trivially easy to install. Highly recommend you DIY this with a part from a site sponsor (if yours is fried) and save yourself $200-300 in markup and labor.
Hope your alternator is OK. This is not a cheap part (at the dealer, anyway) and is difficult to replace.
If you have to replace your ECU, try to get one from a junkyard. I replaced mine for $50 whereas a new part is $1000. I had to get the replacement ECU 'married' to my car at a mechanic shop, but I seem to remember that this is not required on the 900.
Before replacing the ECU the car would run, but I practically had to keep the gas floored to prevent a stall. It would not "adapt". Runs perfectly now.
Wish you the best of luck - hopefully a shorter connection time and older car will mean that your car fared better than mine.
