You do not need to remove the reservoir cap when doing the work. The reservoir could overflow when you do the work if it was ever topped up.
The petal will take some strokes to advance the pads to the rotor and create some resistance.
The petal should never be stroked to the floor as the MC rubber cup seals can be cut by rust deposits in the MC bore that is otherwise not travelled. The result can be MC failure, but that is rarely evident immediately. Always limit travel with something like a length of 2x4 behind the petal.
One does not need to bleed the system when doing a change like this.
Petal returns from floor after you release it? The return is by spring force. It would be very strange if the MC piston was stuck at that extreme postion. But that would be one possible explanation.
If the petal moves and the MC piston moves and there is no resistance, there is a leak somewhere, which can be external, and if not that, the leak is past the MC piston rubber cup seals. That assumes that there is nothing but fluid in the MC and lines etc. If the lines were not openned, it is hard to imagine that air has entered the system.
Did you have any trouble removing the bleeder screw? Does the inside end of the screw look clean or rusted?
You used a c-clamp. Was that easy to use? Often the piston can be pushed in without much resistance and a c-clamp would not be needed.
