My point was that just selecting sport doesn't kill fuel economy around town, that how your drive has a much greater effect. At light throttle openings there's really not much RPM difference in sport vs normal for upshifts. It's only at higher torque and throttle openings that the transmission programming holds the RPMs significantly longer.
BMW did a study in the 80's that basically said that larger throttle openings to reach cruising speed did not have an adverse impact on fuel economy as larger throttle openings reduce pumping losses and improve effeciency.
The ultimate high fuel economy gasoline vehicles are either run at full throttle or are coasting, never at part throttle. Dunno about diesels as they don't have throttle plates.
