Chris,
I have a '94 900SE that's traveled 180k miles and still going; this series of SAAB, in my opinion, has the same potential for longevity that the classic 900 did.
Most of the electrical gremlins I've traced have been faulty assemblys (bad ACC, bad switches, failed motors, etc) or problems with corroded grounds. I haven't had a single problem related to the actual wiring.
For the oil, let me recommend Mobil1 0W40 (you can pick it up at Wal-mart for $4.14 per quart). My SAAB loves the stuff. Also, if you are concerned with sludging issues, remove the dipstick and look at the area above where it is read. If you find any sludge here, you might want to remove the valve cover and look at the rocker assembly. If you find sludge here, might as well remove the oil pan and clean things out (wash out the pan and oil pickup tube). Since you're removing the valve cover to retorque the head, anyway, you will get a good look at the condition of the engine, sludge wise.
Congratulations on the purchase.
