As a counter to what most others are writing, there is a real chance that your front rotors are worn past their acceptable minimum limit at 48,000 miles. My wife's car is an Audi A4 which seems to need front brakes every 30,000 miles (now has 91,000) due to a lot of stop and go driving. Each time the pads have needed replacement, the rotors have been worn to their minimum thickness, so I replace them. Note however that I can get Original Equipment Manufacturer rotors (Brembo brand) for about $30 each vs. the $90+ that the dealer charges for an almost-identical product that comes in an Audi box, and resurfacing alone is $10 each plus extra time, so it's a no-brainer to just replace them. If this is the first time that your car has needed front brakes, you are either very easy on brakes or it is possible that you have gone too far and gouged the surfaces, necessitating replacement.
I can not recall ever replacing the rear rotors on any car that I have owned for 30+ years - I just put new pads in when they need it. The front brakes do the majority of the work in stopping a car and wear out probably twice as fast as the rears.
