I have a 2000 9-3 base model automatic transmission 4-door hatch with 71,000 miles. My wife and I have had it since new.
It has been an ok car. I can't honestly rate it better than that.
The bad:
- The headgasket failed at 48,000 miles (warranty)
- The Saab Information Display (SID) failed (warranty)
- The SID is now failing again at 70,000 miles and is no longer under warranty.
- The Ignition Discharge Module (IDM) seems to fail with an alarming frequency. Mine hasn't failed, but some people recommend carrying a spare. There is a voluntary recall (recall isn't the right word but you get the drift) wherein Saab will replace with a new and upgraded IDM.
- The biggest issue for me is the potential sludge issue. Saab recognized that this engine (the 4 cyl turbo) has a potential to develop sludge under certain driving conditions. They extended the warranty should the engine fail but the owner must demonstrate that the oil changes have occurred as recommended.
The good:
- It's comfortable and quiet and gets decent mileage.
- It holds a lot of stuff
- It's not too common so I don't feel like I have the same car as everyone else.
- I can't say a bad word about the dealer - very nice to work with.
Summary:
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't buy this car again. Frankly, the base model 9-3 doesn't compete well against a nice Accord in my opinion. I buy cars and expect them to last 150k and 10 years without a major engine failure. I'm not sure this car will make it (if you count the head gasket, it didn't even make it 50k). It may, and I'm going to keep it because it's paid for and it is nice and comfortable, but I don't care for the uncertainty. Other people in other situations will no doubt feel otherwise and I'm not saying they're wrong.
