You were looking at a 2003+ 9-3 or perhaps a 9-5 pdf.
You need to remove the whole strut by releasing the ball joint taper and control arm as well. Remove the three fasteners at the top. Then you can use the spring compressor. When doing this you will be close to replacing the shock insert as well and perhaps you are needed new shocks anyways.
Tired old shocks may not work well with lower springs as they will need to work harder to absorb energy with the then reduced suspension range of motion that you then have. And as the travel before you hit the bump stops is reduced, you have a chance at hearing and feeling those that sound like hammer blows even though its hitting an elastomer.
The front bump stop can be shortened by cutting away the lower portion at the narrow part, about one inch, perhaps more. This increases the free travel in which the shocks can absorb energy.
If you want to do this, find one of my earliest posts by searching for drs[underscore]install. It is one of the most difficult DIYs that folks commonly attempt.
