Check Gear Box Diagnosis

Hey there everyone. I used to post here a bit and have been away from the site for a while. Good to be back.
This past Sunday, the Check Gear Box indicator came on in my automatic '96 900T and she wouldn't accelerate from a stop. I made it home stuck in a low gear. Yesterday I went to take the car to a Saab indie (recommended on these boards) and the indicator was off and the car drove and accelerated fine. I left the car at the indie overnight and he called me today to say that the "neutral safety switch" a/k/a "gear lever selector switch" needed to be replaced. I searched some old posts and saw some about grease viscosity in cold weather and now I'm curious if there's an easy way to verify whether the switch in fact needs to be replaced or if the problem could just sort itself out as the weather gets warmer. Short of distrusting the indie and taking the car somehwere else for a second opinion, is there an easy test I can do at home without the computer diagnostic?
Assuming the problem is the switch and it needs to be replaced, does anyone know what that ought to cost? The indie quoted me $331 plus about $100 in labor? This sounds like a lot for a switch.
Thanks all in advance.
