What you can do yourself even though it won't fix the problem, just verify it.
When the problem occurs, turn off the engine but leave ignition on. Move gear selector back and forth between park and 1st gear some 20-30 times and then turn off the ignition.
Start the car and see if it shift and drive normal, if so, it is most likely the gear selector switch that needs to be replaced.
The manufacturer of the switch created a problem with the choice of grease used inside and the old sticky grease creates a quick glitch now and then between the electrical contacts and that throws the transmission computer into limp home mode and the car starts in 3d gear.
By moving the gear selector back and forth you will grind off the grease from the contacts for a short while and the car will work, but sooner or later that old sticky grease will build up again and creating a new glitch.
Suggested retail price of the switch is $337.00 and about 1 1/2 to 2 hours labor at a Saab shop to replace.
