XM and FM direct

I recently installed an FM direct adapter in my '02 9-3SE to try to get better reception for a MyFi unit in a metro area w/ a cluttered FM dial. It has almost completely disabled the function of the normal am/fm antenna. I now get better xm, but horrible am and fm reception. Does anyone have any clue about what to check/change?
Along the way I also discovered that the FM direct adapter was probably not necessary. While the head unit was out, I put a switch in to keep the power antenna down. This was probably all I needed to do. Since the kid at BestBuy sold me the incorrect motorola-european antenna adaptor's, I had to drive a day or 2 w/ just the antenna switched down and the FM direct not in-line. All of my reception problems seemed solved. The built-in modulator of the MyFi is apparently strong enough to overcome the muted reception of a "down" antenna.
Now, I have the correct antenna adaptors and when I put the FM direct in-line, it creates a whole new set of reception problems. Should I just throw the fm direct unit away? Or is there something else at play here?
