Yes, remove battery cable from battery and hold them together.
You see, it differs from car to car and scan tool to scan tool what they do and not.
I wouldn't be surprised if a low cost OBD2 reader only reset the codes but not the adaptive values. I'm not educated enough to say either/or but I have seen even with my Tech 2 scanner that sometimes I have to reset the codes several times before learned values are reset.
If you get a used ECU you probably have to have it programmed to your car with a Tech 2 regarding the TWICE anti theft feature.
