You're losing coolant, not good to drive like that!
Classic symptom, cold then hot engine.
When the heater starts blowing cold air, it's dry, so is your engine.
When temp indicates cold the temp sensor is also probably dry.
Enough may have boiled over to show in the reservoir.
Needs to be fixed pronto!
Twice I'm seen this when radiators failed, haven't seen reports of 9-3 radiators failing yet, check hoses / clamps first. Should be enough residue to see where coolant escaped at this point.
