I think they just had to come up with some kind of difference in numbering since the engine design is different.
Maybe they decided to count the crankshaft too, lol
But than, that theory falls flat if we bring in the B207 engine in the 9-3SS because I don't think it is 7 shafts in that engine how well we try to count.
And what about the D223, D308 and the Z18XE
Engine numbering might make some sense here and there but I don't think we should apply the same laws all over over many years and try to make some sense of it.
Someone said that the 5 in B205/235 implied that it was a low friction engine. I think that might be just as good of an explanation.
