Instrument lights work only briefly @ ignition

Hi I'm a new poster here, and new to Saab.
My girlfriend has a 1996 900 and the instrument lights (tachometer, speedometer, fuel) are lighted for about one second, but then the light goes out.
All gauges function normally without their backlighting. But it's an inconvenience.
I suspect the instrument dimmer dial is kaput, but I've tried everything to engage contact in the dial.
Rather than throw $ at a new dimmer dial, which wires should I test on the old....and is it easy to remove?
I've also heard that the SID can cause a similar problem.
Not knowing anything about these cars, I think the fact that the instrument clusters light for a second and then go out seems related to a relay function. My guesses only.
Hope you gents can shed some light on the subject.
Thanks,
Colin
