In Order for it to fray, it has to be rubbing on the side where the fray is occuring. Do to usual width to the inside of the pulley's to the outside of the belt it is hard to tell. If the fray is occuring around one entire side of the belt then look on the sides of the pully's and notice which one also has wear. Also have you done the short belt conversion, what kind of car, miles, motor type. Sometimes it is possible to hear when running and visually check allignment with motor running and make sure non of the pullies are wobbling. Pullies are easily damaged such as the one on the tensioner and get out of alignment if a little side pressure was applied during installation. Good Luck.
