If the situation isn't too bad, Auto-Rx should work to clean up the engine. I'm now doing the second treatment on a 1997 B234 enginne with 165k miles. It was just starting to look bad so hopefully it was caught before oil starvation did much damage. The Oil filters showed lots of crud when they were examined so it seems to be doing the job. I won't know the final results until the second treatment is finished in a couple weeks. I have before pictures with the VC removed and will take more pics whent finished.
You might want to try a "screen scraping" at the next oil change. Poke around inside the oil pan with a bicycle spoke to determine the extent of the screen clogging. If its really bad you might want to think about dropping the pan and making some larger holes in the screen.
