This website has been so valuable in fixing up my SAAB, I wanted to let you know how I fixed the CEL issue I had. I'll give lots of detail so this can be useful in the archives.
I bought a '97 900 SET 5-spd with 146000 mi. the check engine light on. Code was P0455, Gross EVAP system leak detected. I found a big vacuum line leak going into the throttle body, and replaced the fuel cap, but the CEL kept coming back on after it was reset.
The problem was a split in a 2-inch long hose coming out of the charcoal canister. To get to the canister, you need to remove the front wheel on the driver's right, then get the inner fender panel out of the way. That panel is plastic - you remove several 10mm fasteners at the rear of the wheel opening and a plastic rivet or two, but you don't have to take the whole thing out.
The backs of the rivets can be found inside the engine compartment. Just push the centers out with a screwdriver and they pop out down below. You put them back in with the reverse.
The canister is just above the turn signal light behind the wheel. I removed the wires to the light so I wouldn't hurt them. The canister is mounted with a wedge-type clip. No screws are involved. Push the canister up and forward, and it should just come out.
I believe this is also the way to get to the purge valve. It seemed to be on a hose that went up over the wheelwell towards the front. I didn't check it out but it seemed the right size and shape.
Once I had the hose swapped, I buttoned everything back up and had the CEL reset at an auto parts store. The light has been off for a week now.
Hope you find this useful.
