Define "screeching."
I had a "whizzing" under the hood that got progressively louder and eventually turned into a "screech".
It's winter and snowy here, so I got lazy and waited to have it looked at until my next oil change. Turned out it was the idler pulley, which sheared off the block at about 115 miles from home, the day before I was going to bring it in for service.
Luckily, nothing got damaged and the repair didn't cost any more than if I'd done the job when I should have.
Pennytech Stethoscope: Open the hood and get yourself a length of heater hose. BE CAREFUL OF MOVING PARTS, and with the car running, move one end of the heater hose around the engine bay, while keeping the other end close to your ear.
You can pinpoint a lot of troublesome noises with this method. If it's a pulley, you'll definitely be able to figure it out.
