Avoid stickers in jambs, that's TMU..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: can dealer update odomtr ???, SWEDECAR ![]() ![]() |
When a problem with an odometer occurs and it needs to be replaced, make sure the roll it up or set it to the previous mileage. Don't let a dealer or an independent install it and leave it at zero and tell you everthing will be allright if they record it and put a sticker in the doorjamb.
A sticker in the doorjamb explaining the odometer reading makes a car fall in to the "true mileage unknown" catagory or TMU. There's two categories for miles in California, "actual" mileage, and "not actual" mileage. Not actual mileage is also known as TMU, true miles unknown. Like a salvage stamp on a title a TMU stamp doesn't differentiate the degree of odometer discrepenancy or allow for any stickers in doorjambs that explain the descrepency. There's not a third category for odometers replaced, but not reset by lazy mechanics. If your mechanic puts in odometer that's not reset to the original mileage he is in effect declaring your car TMU and materially affecting it's value.
