Yep, same problem with my 01 Viggen. Bought it CPO and reported to the dealer problems of weak AM reception and radio sometimes wouldn't automatically turn on when the engine came on. Dealer replaced the radio because it was within the first 30-days of purchase. Problem seemed to be better for the first few weeks, then AM reception gradually deteriorated more and the automatic turn on failed more and more.

Now the radio only comes on automatically 1 out of 500 starts at the maximum. Sometimes the radio doesn't come on at all when I push the ON button. The only way I can get it to turn on is to turn ignition off, press the CD eject and ON buttons a few times, turn the engine back on and then press the on button - very irritating. Ironically, one time I turned off the radio before shutting off the engine and the next time I started it, the radio turned on automatically - lol.

As your radio does, if I turn the radio on before starting the car, it will turn off as the engine starts and not return to the ON position. Dealer will not replace the radio because CPO doesn't cover audio problems.

I replaced the fuba antenna, which improved the AM reception. I believe the radio ground is faulty too. AM reception will change when I drive over bumps. When the reception is poor, I can improve it by using my hand to strongly press the radio toward the firewall. Perhaps the faulty ground is a contributor why the radio won't turn on automatically.

If you do a search, you will find more stories like this.

Good luck. Let us know if you discover a remedy.
