I bought an aftermarket (ScanTech) paper one a couple years back. I thought it was very obviously inferior -- flimsy and just not able to filter all that much compared to the SAAB filter media. It also did not snap on to the airbox nearly as tightly (which would cause a leak = no filtering). I ended up selling it on eBay and washing and reusing my old one. Recently replace that one with a new genuine version because it had gotten trashed from repeated rewashings.
Stick with the OEM, it's much better. Although more expensive, you can wash & reuse it as Dean suggested (I've done this) and you don't really have to replace it or clean it all that often anyway.
