A used car is always a used car.

Never trust a car salesman but always have the car checked out by another shop before buying it. This goes for all car purchases.

Most likely it was not the serpentin belt that broke, but one of the plastic pulley bearings that the belt rides over. Those pulleys are difficult to diagnose and how much longer they have left. 60 K miles is a good rule lifespan on those pulleys, but the belt can easily make it longer.

The grease inside the bearings will slowly get thrown out by the centrifugal forces and the bearing runs dry.
A marginal bearing can last almost forever if you are only doing short trips with the car, but when taking a longer trip where the heat of that dry bearing builds up more and more, it can "break the neck" of it.

At least here in CA, when a car is sold by a car dealer, the brakes has to be at least 50% left of friction material and brake rotors cannot be below minimum thickness.

If a customer would to ask me about buying a 10 year old car for $5000.00 and then to add 110 miles EVERY day in commute, I would say that they should expect to see some maintenance and repair cost right away.
That's just Murphy's law in the works. The former owner might have gotten a notice from his mechanic that the car was in need of several big repairs in the near future and he decided to trade in the car instead, passing the repair over to the next owner.

This doesn't mean you cannot overcome the hurdles and at the end, have a fairly reliable car, you just need to catch up on the repairs and with that, beat (or at least settle) with Murphy's law.

Just about a year ago, I sold my own car (a 9 year old Volvo with 125K) to a customer. I had kept up on all services and before I sold it, I went over it again and replaced several things that was marginal.

It only took 2 weeks after sale and 3 new issues showed up that I didn't know about. No big deal though and I could repair them for free.

Some month later an ignition coil died on the car (very, very rare on a Volvo) and he had to have the local dealer fix it since it was closer.
And the latest now was that I had to replace a leaking power steering pump which is also not that common on this Volvo model.

I put about 3K miles per year on that car for 3 years and now the new owner had added 15K in about a year. That will cost some money in repairs and maintenance and an older car might not be suited to act like spring chicken again if it has lived a slumber life for a longer time.
