Crankshaft R & R Questions...

Hello,
My 900s crankshaft starved for oil due to a sludged pickup screen.
I am planning on either getting my crank's journals machined (slight grooving on a couple of journals) or getting a better used crank that will use standard sized bearings as oversized bearings (suggestions on places to buy?) seem to be much more costly (if I get my crank machined).
I am in the process of removing only the manual trans., as it also needs a throw out bearing (and might as well change the clutch), and am wondering if the crankshaft can be swapped out with the motor in the car (with the flywheel and crank pulley removed).
I am trying to not have to remove the engine to replace/repair the crank, but am also tentative about getting the upper main bearings and crank's thrust washers properly located upon reinstallation of the crank (with motor in car).
All this work is on my back, under the car in my garage. I don't need to lift the car as much to remove the trans. as I would have to lift the car much higher to remove the engine as well.
Bottom line, can the crank be reinstalled exclusively with the engine in the car?
Tips?
Thanks,
George M.
