I went through this when I broke the tip off the tensioner guide (use 2 people to remove the head, one to hold the chain helps a lot to prevent that) -
ran the car fine for 10k w/ worn and broken tip, no difference in noise etc. I took the cover off to replace the part BUT -
pain in the a$$ to get the cover off in engine unless you jack it up just right while removing motor mounts, etc -
when I finally got it off, I tried to remove the idler for the balance shaft chain (it sits in front of the timing chain and must come off first) - T40 in the slot and completely rounded- ate the teeth - and I had zero offset (used a special socket wrench w/ bent handle) so it was welded on. Tried to loosen either balance shaft torque and it just spun each, even with vice grips holding the chain, etc -
long story short, before I DESTROYED the timing I decided it wasn't worth it and put it all back together.
If you do decide to replace the timing parts, do them ALL, as you'll likely break something trying to remove them!!!
