Warning - I am an A/C hacker, not a tech.

If there is no refrigerent in the system, rumor has it that those pressure switches mentioned eariler will not allow the compressor to engage (electrically). So the first thing to check might be the pressures. You can buy a reasonable set of guages at Autozone for about $50. The instructions with the guages will tell you how to diagnose basic problems. You can try checking/charging it if you have some idea of what you are doing and see if it holds pressure. There is no way to know if the compressor is good unless you plug all the leaks and get it to turn on.

The usual problem with the NG A/C seems to be that the high pressure hose (under the radiator) springs a leak. Look at the connector where the rubber changes to aluminum tubing on the end farthest from the compressor. You'll need to be under the car to see it and probably remove the under pan.

You can buy a replacment hose from eeuroparts if you need it. I would suggest replacing the receiver/dryer at the same time. The expansion valves are known to wear so you could do that too if you want to catch all the possible wear items but you may not need it.

After you plug any leaks, you need to evacuate the system and recharge with oil and refrigerent then test again. Therein lies a problem - you can't get all tehair out of the system without a vacuum pump. You'll need to find a pro to suck it clean then recharge it. However, you should be able to get enough refrigerent in to prove that it holds pressure - it just will not cool very well with lots of air in there. If it holds and sools a little, take it to a pro for a clean and recharge.
