This timing belt have gone through so many different stages of upgrades and not even Saab knew in the beginning what was going on (at least it looked that way and still does).

So when the V6 engine was introduced in 94, the service interval on timing belt was 95,000 miles (customer pay). When the 1995 model was released, the service interval was lowered to 35,000 miles for the first one and 30K after that and with Saab picking up the tab for replacement for the first three belts.

That interval was also implemented on the 1994 models.

With the release of the 1997 V6, the belt interval was up to 65,000 (customer pay) since the 97 model had all the latest gadgets installed from factory.

It is complicated with the mileage since Saab decided in 92 to use 35K interval for the very first service instead of the more normal 30K interval (just a political move), so that's why it ended up to be 35K service, 65K and 95K service.

With the first bulletin coming out mentioning the belt being replaced at 35K instead of the 95K they said the belt was at fault. The belt and belt alone was whats needed to be replaced with an updated version.

So that's what the Saab dealers did in the beginning, replacing belts every time without replacing the tensioner pulleys.

Not until around 2001 did a service bulletin come out telling the dealers to replace the whole tensioner kit with belt and pulleys. But that the tensioner pulleys only needed to be replaced ones and then the belt should be replaced at 60K intervals after that.

When the Saab 9-5 came out in 98. Saab had decided on replacing the belt for free at 60K miles (by now, the political move was over and service intervals back to normal 30K intervals). The 9-5 model just like the 1997 NG900/9000 had the latest and best pulleys from factory and therefore they only replaced the belt for free at the 60K service.

If you search the 9-5 board you will find many posts about failed belts and tensioner pulleys just some 10-20K miles after the belt was replaced at the free 60K service, and some near misses where the customer heard noises coming from the engine and manage to have the belt and pulleys replaced just before the fatal blow.

This kind of show that the true problem is not yet found or corrected.

So most of us longtimers here on the board always suggest to have the belt and complete tensioner assembly/pulleys replaced every 60K miles to be on the safe side, even if as in the 9-5 case, the customer has to pay for the pulleys when doing the "free" belt replacement at 60K miles.
