Weird, doesn't seem like it would be the clutch or the hydraulics. Is this the stock shifter? You may want to check your shift adjustment, see if it's loose. I know that reverse does not have a synchro in these boxes. The Saab rebuild/upgrade kit does add one.
ChrisS has a good idea to put it into another gear (1 or 3) to try to get the gear set lined up before shifting into reverse. How old is the trans-axle oil btw?
