Yes, the lamp should show when ingition is on and engine not running.
I share your concern, I would have the same feelings about this.
You could run the engine till warmed up a bit, then remove the oil pressure relief valve spring and piston, replace the retainer cap and then run the engine briefly. There will be no oil pressure, sort of like when you start with a new oil filter. Then you could listen and determine if the noise is oil pressure or oil pump related. Then replace the spring and piston.
With the piston, you can remove scoring by flatening out raised areas. There is no reason to have the piston perfect for it to do what it needs to do. The big concern is it being stuck.
I have never had the pump apart and do not know if there is any way to not put things back incorrectly. I do know that hydraulics can be noisy and perhaps the noise is associated with the oil pump.
Question: how does the pressure change cold VS hot?
