I've owned my mid-life crisis, an '03 9-3 SE convertible (38k miles) for about three weeks now. Yesterday, I took it to my local dealer for some minor warranty stuff and an oil change. I was shocked to get a call from my service advisor telling me that the counter balance shaft bearings in the engine had failed, and that the repairs would require removal of the engine. My car will be in the shop for 4-5 days. (It's FINALLY spring in Wisconsin, so I'm missing my first serious "drop top" opportunities!)
The engine was a bit noisier than my wife's '01 9-5, but I attributed that to the smaller (2.0 vs 2.3) displacement, and the fact that everything is noisier in a convertible.
The work ($3000 estimate) is covered under warranty, so there will be no cost to me. I've done a search of this bb and can find little about this shaft, other than that it's primary purpose is to minimize vibration and torquing of the engine on acceleration.
So my questions; is this a fluke, or something indemic to the 2.0L engine, and what might have caused the failure? I have service records for the car -- only Mobil 1 oil changes, no other major engine work, clean carfax, etc.
Any thoughts out there??
Thanks,
Joe
