xW doesn't = 'weight'. Both numbers mean 'weight', but it's really kind of a viscosity index.
First # (with the 'w') means winter, it indicates the viscosity when measured cold (0F or 32F or ??). Second # indicates the operating-temperature viscosity (212F).
So... 5w-30 and 5w-40 should have about the same viscosity when they are cold (winter). After they are warmed up in the engine, the 40 will have higher viscosity.
Similarly... 0w-40, 5w-40, & 10w-40 will have different viscosities when cold, but they'll be about the same after the engine is warm.
