I have always found the best way to see whats happening is to use a volt meter. Measure it with the car running. At the battery terminals it should measure 13.8Vdc or higher, mine measures 14.2Vdc at idle, replaced alternator last year.
Car shut of it should measure 11.8 to 12Vdc. Turn the radio an see where it goes. It should remaine at 11.8 or higher.
If you have 13.8vdc or higher while at idle, you know your alternator is working. Touch terminals of battery to make sure they are not getting hot. If so you may have a bad connection. It may also be possible to identify a loose connection with the hood open and someone starting the car and listen or watch for arcing, even better if done in a darker area. Check battery cell(s) water levels.
When was the battery last replaced, how many miles on the alternator.
900set97, sedan, auto, 169k miles, Massachusetts.
