You might have broken a line which is part of the "evaporative emissionscontrol system".
There is a line from the fuel tank to a charcoal canister with a valve inside the right wheel well. Another line from thereinto the engine compartment to the canister purge valve, and a third hose from there to the rear right risde of the throttle body ("right" as in driver side right hand). There is also a pressure sensor inside the fuel tank.
The ecu tests the pressure when the car is started. The P0442 code is a generic emissions code which is supposed to mean there is a small leak at the gas cap or fuel tank, but on some models (after mid-'96, I think), you get the same code if the evap system is not working (or disconnected). Not right away, it takes some number of engine starts b/f it shows up.
The fuel level sensor (a.k.a. fuel gauge sender) in the tank is a float, connected to a variable resistor. The sender and the gauge can be tested from a connector below an inspection cover under the back seat, under a flap in the carpeting. There are two connectors. One for fuel pump power and a second one for the float sensor. The resistance changes from below 100 ohms (near empty) to almost 400 ohms (full). The resistance should correspond to the tank level, and the position of the gauge should follow the resistance.
