I agree that the C900 had a better hatch, though near the far aft end it's a bit too short. The 9-3's seat fold easier, but they don't lie flat, which bugs me (why not just make the car 2" longer so they'll be flat?). The lack of storage space like in the center console and door map pockets also isn't something I'm thrilled with. But, they're different types of cars, and you can debate back and forth about their relative plusses and minusses.
I'll take a look at that parcel shelf tonight and see what it's like in detail. I would like to have it with me, just so I can put the rear seats back up and have the car look finished, vs. having a gaping hole there. If I'm wind up being concerned about its strength, I'll just put it upright along the side of the hatch. If need be, I can figure something out to add to its strength (piece of plywood to fill in the gaps underneath, some kind of stiffener bonded to the underside, etc).
