Thanks for everyone's replies. Well, last night, I took it out, laid it on the garage floor, and stood on it. It deflects down, but hits the floor for support before bad things happen to the shelf. The only thing to be careful about is the aft edge of it (the curved edge) can deflect rearward, rather than downward, which I think could set a bend in it. I haven't tried it upside down, but will look at it that way, too. I think it should be ok for luggage and a couple of energetic cats. I'll just be careful not to load that aft edge.
