It's fairly easy to check the timing chain slack. Remove the air cleaner box to get to the chain tensioner. You'll need 13mm and 27mm sockets to get it out.
I was talking to an indie mechanic about this a couple months back when I had some noise. Loose timing chains are supposed to make a "slapping" type of noise. Mine was a more uniform rattle. He said that the balance chain usually goes first and it ends up costing alot because common practice is to remove the engine to replace the chains guides & sprockets. There's a post on S***Central by "tomasz" from June 1995 that describes how to replace the chains without removing the engine. Very interesting!
I decided to remove the balance chain after finding a broken guide in the sump. No chain noise at present so all is well.
