I had some worries about that when they started to discuss removing chain from under since I didn't know exactly how the tensioner ratchet was working and if it was a chance that the ratchet piston in tensioner would fall out when the chain was removed.
When I looked at the design at a later job, I saw that it is not possible for the balance chain tensioner to come apart (pop out) and as long as the tensioner is bolted to engine, it will keep the oil pressurized.
Still, when I have the timing cover off, I remove it and plug the hole since I don't like to leave parts inside an engine if they don't have a reason to be there.
