You have some adaption and mis-firing errors, and an error for a lock of a signal from the automatic trany output shaft speed senor. The later is probably a problem that is totally separate from the engine issues.

You have a mixture issue that may have fouled the spark plugs. The missing may be from the fouled spark plugs or from a mixture that is too far gone to ignite. The two major causes of severe mixture problems on a T5 are VAC line failures to the MAP sensor and FPR, both from the TB. The orginal VAC lines to on a 1996 model will be very degraded. All should be replaced. The small VAC line from the TB to the check valve and from that to the PCV tee on the valve cover should be *carefully* cut away from those plastic parts that have become very brittle from time+heat+contamination.

If idle speeds go high, the larger hose from the TB to the evaporative emissions control system solenoid valve on the RH fender my be cracked or split.

So check those two critical hoses for connections, cracks, splits etc. If you find and correct damage, then the plugs need to be inspected. If gaps are ok and electrodes not eroded, then they may clean themselves on a long highway run by burning off. Otherwise, replace: BPCR6ES11 or 6ES gapped to .035 - .037"

When you get things working right, use a large bottle of Techron Concentrate to deal with combustion chamber deposits.

The trany output shaft sensor should have its wiring and connectors checked first. If wiring looks ok, check that sensor has a resistance near 6.3K ohms. If not, replace, else check harness connector. This problem with the sensor will prevent the trany from working right and the torque converter lockup may not be working which would also eat fuel.

A flakey DIC could also cause mis-fires and mixture CELS. Miles on vehicle? Miles on DIC?
