Say, I've got a similar problem with my '97 900 SE Turbo. My upper hose burst in the garage maybe 2 minutes after I turned off the car and closed the garage door. My guess this is just a coincidence, though.
Since I replaced that hose, now and then I get a medium-pizza-sized coolant puddle on the pavement below the _back_ of the engine, right in the middle between the front wheels. This almost never happens when I'm checking for it. Once I caught it leaking, but I'd just gotten to work and I had my tie and white shirt on. Not about to crawl under the car then.
It seemed from above that I should investigate heater hoses, and I wondered if an engine block temperature sensor is back there. Perhaps that could be leaking?
I've never had the coolant rushing back issue, however. When mine gets low, I fill it up again. Sometimes it's a couple of days, sometimes it's weeks.
