This worked for me: I had completely ripped the leather off of mine, since it was falling off anyway. I found out that the leather is stretched over a rubber shiftknob shape and held at the bottom, where the reverse-lock goes in, by a little plastic ring. Without the leather and its ring, the rubber shift knob would just lift off easily.
I had bought a used shifter from a 9-3 in a junkyard. After finding out about the little ring on my damaged shiftknob, I tried using a tiny screwdriver and pried out the ring on my good knob. I could then pull the leather out of the inside so it draped down like a little skirt. Oh, how I love little skirts.
Anyway, I put the good shifter in a vise and twisted the knob with my hands and it came off (medium to hard effort required to break some adhesive), leaving the fabled white plastic shaft top in place. After that, I simply swapped the new knob onto the old shifter, tucked the skirt back in and re-installed the ring. It would take me less than 20 minutes to do it again, I figure.
