If the gears are popping out after they have been engaged properly, something is wrong inside the transmission.
However, I think you might not have meant to say that in that way.
If you can't get any gear engaged properly due to that they are just grinding, it sounds like the self adjusting part of the clutch cable has given up or that the clutch cable have partially broken like in the picture.
Do you have a loose floor mat in the car? Remove that one completly to give you more space for the clutch pedal.
Those floor mats are really bad for the clutch operation and should not be used on manual 900s between 94 and 97.
The self adjusting mechanism have a hard time as it is to adjust properly and it works on that the pedal can complete a full stroke which the floor mat will hinder.
