I have a similar problem on my wife's 1997 900T. Several gauges are off all the time, turbo pressure, rpm meter, etc. Those gauges turn on once a month (maybe) for about 5-10 minutes and then go off again. I looked at it, and the instrument panel has a backplane with many poor quality connectors. I have also traced down several bad diodes and broken traces on the backplane and replaced/fixed those. The gauges work fine for a little while and then quit again. In your case it sounds like the connectors are your only problem. If you believe that you can get the instrument panel out and replace the connectors with good ones plus check the PCB traces for small cracks then you should be all set. It may be as simple as the connection to the "dark panel" switch may be the only one that is bad. On my wife's car we decided to ignore it for now.
