Infinity Speakers - 2 ohm vs 4 ohm vs 8 ohm....confused

So I'm finally going to replace my OEM speakers ('02 Viggen, 6 spkrs). with some Infinity models. The majority of the posts seem to favour these, especially the Kappas. However the Kappas are rated at 2 ohms. I checked my OEM dash units and they are 8 ohm. I researched posts regarding impediance and see that some people have 4 ohm OEM speakers in their cars.
From what I've read, going to a lower impediance speaker can cause the amp to over heat and die prematurely. So why is everyone using the Infinity Kappas (2 ohm) versus the Infinity Reference (4 ohm)? OR skip Infinity all together and find some 8 ohm speakers??
Any electronics wizards out there who understand this stuff?? Is it that the head unit and amp are compatible with various loads?
Thanks for any insights you can offer...
Robert
