Automotive plants really don't 'build' anything, they assemble parts. Most of those parts are contracted out to suppliers, who in turn supply other manufacturers all around the world.

Then there are factories that build replacement parts....often copies of the original. Some of these are made by reputable fabricators, but some aren't. There is where the danger lies....someone can always make something cheaper, usually by using inferior materials or processes.

I always buy OEM, from the dealer or other source (from what I can tell, Genuine Saab, and some others sell OEM). Experience has shown me to avoid aftermarket. I hate doing things more than once!!! I've had ball joints where the rubber lasted one winter. I've had brake rotors that rusted so badly the pads lasted less than a year. And I've had tires that lasted forever, but provided no traction. There is no savings in that.

A couple of things that I've heard but can't say I know for sure, is that some non dealer OEM isn't the same as what the dealer sells (different tolerances, adjusted values on Bosch electrics, etc.). I've also heard that buying of off Ebay has risks that exceed the apparent quality of the product....it's a private sale and thus the seller has no liability (anyone know about this???).

The local Indy is usually a good place to start sourcing parts if you know them well enough. They know the parts and see how they perform, but sometimes they too get it wrong.

Best of luck,
Robert
