I just wanted to post a followup to an easy fix on the convertible top rear cover.
My car is a 97 900 2.0se turbo convertible.
Today when trying to take the top down, a grinding sound started at the point when the rear cover goes up to conceal the top.
When taking the right side of the trunk apart, to gain access to the motor/transmission assembly, I noticed that the motor gear was half out of the transmission assembly.
I followed some useful tips on this board and used a hose clamp to mate the transmission and motor back together, tightening just enough to mesh the gears.
It works perfect, and I am sure it saved me $1000 bill. I have heard horror stories with these convertible tops.
I know I will have to take the hose clamp off if there is an emergency and I have to manually lower the top, but how often does this really happen... And besides, all you need to do is unclamp the clamp, and then follow the manually top lowering procedure. A 5 minute fix.
It is unfortunate that saab makes so many parts that wear SO easily. A $38,000 car should not have to deal with this type of nonsense. It seems ongoing that I run into issues that an owner should not see in a car. Especially with a car of this price tag. It does really seem apparent that since GM took over saab, the quality has really gone down hill.
The part I never understand about Saab, is it seams like they do NOT learn from their mistakes. There are SO many parts on saabs that are poorly designed, and the same design in continuous from year to year.
