I have been trying to determine the exact same thing as I plan upgrades to my '99 9-3 SE. I found a post earlier today that indicates that the 8th digit of the VIN identifies the motor as either the 204L (175-185hp - N in the VIN) or the 204R (200-205hp - P in the VIN.)

I understand that the 204R (HOT) uses the Viggen's larger intercooler some differences in the turbo. I'm not sure what else differentiates the two.

For me, this was a bit of a disappointment as I beleive I'll now need a larger intercooler to reach my hp goal of 320.

Anyone know if the Intercooler on the '97 9000 Aero would work for this purpose? I just happen to have one (a '97 Aero) rusting away...
