900 vs. 9-3

I'm looking for a vehicle to replace my dearly departed '91 80 Quattro and have decided that I want a wagon, or at least a wagon like hatchback. On a friend's recommedation I considered the 9-5, but there appear to be too many issues which saddens me greatly (very nice cars indeed).
Because I've made the fool-hearty decision to go back to school I'm somewhat limited on budget. Now don't go pointing at japan because, well, it's rude to talk about soul-less-if-practical-and-sturdy cars on a Saab enthusiast's site. Furthermore, have you shopped japanese wagons under $8k lately? If you answered Subaru, you've only satisfied the soul-less requirement above. Go back to the books and start over. Unfortunately, since gas-swilling-steel-wasting-totally-unnecessary-for-90%-of-the-population SUV's have been deemed cool, Japan nearly abandoned the wagon for the better part of a decade until Mazda's came back. But those are too pricey for this shopper. So back to Saab's, shall we? Just for a minute?
I'm considering the 900's (non-turbo) against the 9-3's now. The former seem to have fewer inherent vulnerabilities, given the normal-aspiration and tolerance for old-fashion (analog) oil. But then, they're older too. Even if the miles are low, pixels and seals don't fuss over mileage. But 9-3's seem to get lack-lustre ratings, even if polished with a grain of salt. Folks complain often about turbos, sludge and throttle bodies, along with the side-shows like knob implosions.
I'd like to minimize post-purchase investments save, of course, for proper maintenance.
900 or 9-3?
