I have a 1999 9-3 automatic base model. Which is not very far from base. I have done a lot of modifications to engine, brakes and suspension. I Solo II or auto-x the car on a regular basis. I bought it used from Carmaz with 51k and is now with 93K. The only real trouble which not a big deal was the DIC and i change it under extended warranty i got from Carmax. Also the A/C knobs went dead right after I bought the car change it thru Carmax at no charge.
I pull the maintenance records from the dealer the first owner was a woman and she did maintain the car very good.
So in reality is a very reliable car but it also like gambling and fishing it all depends on luck.
What i recommend. Get the maintenance records of the car both the 900 and the 9-3. Do a Carfax just to make sure is never been in a wreck etc.
