Firstly, I sincerely thank all for the feedback. It's given me a lot to consider.

The complaints I'm thinking of are largely those from sites like edmunds or Carsurvey.org, and gauging them by comparison with other vehicles. Many sad faces on the carsurvey 9-5 blog in particular, where as the 9-3 was a cheerier crowd. Same, sort of, on edmunds, though the ratings of the 9-3 were the lower of the two. (???)

The japs, I'd like to say, do not--despite modern mythology--have an exclusive birth-right to trouble-free cars. My 1984 900, god bless her soul, had 234 thousand extremely faithful miles on her ($400 to adopt her from the previous owner, that was my last investent)when she met her untimely fate. She never stood a chance against that semi-drivin, gnome-doting soccer mom. Not for a minute. And she just quitely tending to business at a stop sign. I digress. Often. Her successor, an '85, put up with a drinking, speeding (not simultaneously), and severely abusive father for 60 thousand miles. And she with only 6 or seven oil changes. Bad, very bad. Not a peep from either of these cars.

My dearly departed 80 quattro has about 90k (on top of the first 130) of hard times as well. While I, as a care taker of cars, have become better (born again, even), others as drivers have not. The quattro has been rammed no less than 3 times. I stopped driving it because I got a ticket for, uh, unreasonable ugliness I guess.

I am a religious and pure synthetic oil changer, waxing Mobil at this point. If there is strong belief out there (in here) that easy driving and the above maintenance can avoid odd failures like those of throttle bodies, in a 9-3 or a 9-5, I'm in.

But how to tell if the previous owner was nice. Saab, GM--someone--hid the upper valve train from us! The first thing I do when inspecting a car is remove the oil filler cap and look for varnish--probably the most telltale sign on a vehicle. This is now my principle concern in considering a Saab. Without bringing each considered car to a garage, removing the oil pan or valve cover, I don't how to intuit the behavior of the previous owner except from vagueries like general appearances. Carfax only shows service records for the suckers that pay the dealers to do it at $60 a pop.

Any thoughts on how to check for proper maintenance history?

Thanks again.
