Love my SAAB...... Yet hate the headache!!!!.... Posted by peter [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
This site is trully a Saab owners dream, especially if the owner knows the difference between a lugnut wrench and spark plug wrench!!!! My headache is my Saab (94 900s 2.3NA) inability to pass the Emission's test, actually the Nox part of the test only. Even after myself, (a competent DIY'er,who is not only capable but enjoys working on cars )has studied this Saab BB for "hours" and has learned much (Thank You) but either it gets fixed soon or I'm going to give the car to my Mother-in-law!!! I would appreciate any last suggestions. Though I will give you all the info I can, it is a 2.3na w/ 145000 miles on it. It runs smooth, idles at 1050 rpm which used to be 1200rpm ( Vacuum leak, repaired) has lots of power, starts easy, Gas mileage 18/20 mpg city/hwy, I use only chevron w/techron 94 octane. Since it failed the first test (of 5 tests so far), this is what I've done to it, distributor cap, rotor ,spark plugs (autolite xp5503 64$ for 4 plugs is that high?), airfilter 55$ (Its Canada whatta you expect)anyways continuing on, all the vacuum lines replaced, including PCV and brake booster fittings checked TB intake and exhaust manifolds for leaks and loose bolts , compression tested engine, flushed radiator and engine, SAI system is secure and working normally, cleaned the IAC valve, changed oil and filter, checked engine light codes none stored and never had any warnings from it, the 3 wire 02 sensor was reseated to make sure proper grounding ( will check 2 morrow with analog multimeter to verify proper function, recently installed new mass air flow sensor, the engine does not leak/consume oil, I've cleaned the throttle body as well, done the propane test with no results. I"ve done the gallon of methanol in tank for the test and it still failed the NOx part, but it did reduce the HC and CO emissions substantially but since these were allready passing ,big whoppee. but the Nox part was no different, same as if normal gas was in it. BTW
max all MY RESULTS avg PASS
hc .5 g/km .45 .14
co 9.32g/km 8.02 2.65
Nox 1.24g/km 1.93 0.60
these are the results from the last test, will post all of them if needed . As you can see I've been doing many of the things suggested on this site and now I am wondering is it the CAT, someone give it its last chance, before it goes to THE MOTHER-IN-LAW!!!!! Like I said earlier there are no driveability problems, actually for a car that old, it scoots around like its out of the showroom a year ago. i've forgotten what else i was going to say about it but will add later after shower due to laying under the car staring aimlesselly at the bottom of the engine on a VERY rainy day in Vancouver.
Thanks-A-bunch
Peter
