Foremost is timely maintenance, oil particularly (wear and sludge).
Watch for evidence of loose headbolts, -No- leaks is normal for these cars, to not quote lots of dealers.
Manual HVAC more troublesome than ACC, if you're in a cold climate get the ACC (& heated seats) period. Self test ACC (AUTO+OFF) should yield a '0' for no faults after 30 secs (PARTICULARLY if you're shopping a 9-5).
Weak upper idler, easy DIY, WAZEE sold quality replacement at one point.
DIC recall seems to have calmed the failures so know that status, but working spares are now cheap so equip your trunk.
Premium trim includes upgraded stereo which you need, not as bad as 9-3SS but why suffer.
Not a great chassis but it can be improved, -plenty- peppy.
I look forward to driving mine every time I get in it. Moreso now that I've got the sport exhaust.
If you shop 9-5's, you want an Aero, why fool around?
